A simple yet stunning Halloween cocktail featuring fresh blood orange juice, vodka, lime, and a touch of simple syrup. This cozy drink is perfect for a quiet night in or a festive party, with a naturally spooky deep red color and a balanced sweet-tart flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 23 medium blood oranges (about ½ cup fresh juice)
  • 2 oz vodka (such as Tito’s or Ketel One)
  • ½ oz fresh lime juice
  • ½ oz simple syrup (or to taste)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: fresh thyme sprigs, blood orange slices, sugared rim, rosemary sprig, plastic vampire fang

Instructions

  1. Roll each blood orange firmly on the counter, then cut in half crosswise. Juice enough to get ½ cup of fresh blood orange juice. Set aside. Cut one juiced half into a thin slice for garnish.
  2. If desired, run a lime wedge around the rim of a lowball or rocks glass and dip in sugar (or black sanding sugar). Fill the glass with ice to chill.
  3. Drop the reserved blood orange slice into a cocktail shaker or mason jar. Add 2-3 fresh thyme leaves if using. Gently muddle 3-4 times to release oils and juices—do not over-muddle.
  4. Add the ½ cup fresh blood orange juice, 2 oz vodka, ½ oz fresh lime juice, and ½ oz simple syrup to the shaker. Adjust sweetness to taste.
  5. Fill the shaker about ¾ full with ice. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until well-chilled.
  6. Remove the ice from the serving glass (or keep fresh ice). Strain the cocktail through a fine-mesh strainer into the glass.
  7. Add fresh ice if needed. Garnish with a blood orange slice, a sprig of thyme or rosemary, and optionally a plastic vampire fang. Serve immediately.

Notes

For the best flavor, use fresh blood oranges and fresh lime juice—bottled juice will result in a flat taste. Adjust simple syrup based on the sweetness of the blood oranges. To make a non-alcoholic version, replace vodka with sparkling water or ginger beer. For a party, batch the liquid ingredients (minus ice) and refrigerate up to 3 days; shake with ice when ready to serve.
