This cozy copycat Starbucks peppermint mocha comes together in just five minutes with simple ingredients. It’s rich, chocolatey, and perfectly minty—better than the coffee shop version and made right at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (240 ml) strong brewed coffee (medium-dark roast)
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) whole milk (or oat milk for dairy-free)
  • 2 tablespoons (30 grams) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract (or more to taste)
  • 1–2 tablespoons honey or sugar (to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream (for topping, optional)
  • Crushed candy cane or peppermint pieces (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Brew 1 cup (240 ml) of strong coffee using a medium-dark roast. Set aside.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, combine 3/4 cup (180 ml) whole milk and 2 tablespoons (30 grams) semi-sweet chocolate chips. Stir constantly with a whisk until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is steaming (about 2-3 minutes). Do not let it boil.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat. Whisk in 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1-2 tablespoons honey or sugar. Taste and adjust sweetness or peppermint as desired.
  4. Pour the hot brewed coffee into a mug. Slowly pour the warm chocolate-milk mixture over the coffee and stir gently to combine.
  5. Top with whipped cream and crushed candy cane pieces if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t add peppermint extract while the milk is still on the heat; the alcohol can evaporate and weaken the flavor. For a dairy-free version, use oat milk (barista blend) and dairy-free chocolate chips. For a less sweet drink, use dark chocolate chips (60-70% cacao) and skip the honey. Warm your mug with hot water before pouring to keep the drink hot longer.
