A quick and easy hot buttered rum recipe that comes together in under 5 minutes. Simply melt butter with brown sugar, add dark rum and a cinnamon stick, then top with boiling water for a warm, comforting winter drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (14g)
  • 2 teaspoons dark brown sugar, firmly packed (8g)
  • 1 whole cinnamon stick (about 3 inches long)
  • 2 ounces dark rum (60ml)
  • 6 ounces boiling water (180ml)
  • Optional: whipped cream for topping
  • Optional: freshly grated nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Place 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in the bottom of a heatproof mug.
  2. Add 2 teaspoons of firmly packed dark brown sugar directly onto the butter.
  3. Insert one whole cinnamon stick into the mug, leaning it against the side.
  4. Pour about 2 tablespoons of boiling water into the mug. Stir the butter and sugar together until completely combined and the butter has melted, about 15 seconds.
  5. Pour 2 ounces of dark rum into the mug and stir once or twice.
  6. Fill the mug with the remaining boiling water (about 4-6 ounces) and stir gently once more.
  7. Let the drink rest for 30 seconds to allow the cinnamon to steep.
  8. Add optional toppings: a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use freshly boiled water for best results. Room temperature butter melts more evenly. Stir in one direction to help emulsify. For parties, prepare the butter-sugar mixture in advance and store in the fridge. This drink is best enjoyed within 10-15 minutes of making.
