Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bag (16 oz) large pretzel rods (e.g., Rold Gold or store brand)
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 1 tablespoon cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, finely chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (fresh)
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup baby carrots
  • 1/2 cup black olives
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the Pretzel ‘Fingers’: Dab a tiny amount (about 1/4 teaspoon) of softened cream cheese on the end of each pretzel rod. Press a sliced almond onto the cream cheese to look like a fingernail. Set aside on a plate.
  2. Start the Cheese Dip: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking, and continue whisking until the mixture thickens, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Finish the Cheese Dip: Reduce heat to low. Add shredded cheddar cheese, smoked paprika, and cayenne (if using). Stir until cheese is completely melted and sauce is smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Pour into a small bowl.
  4. Make the Yogurt Dip: In a small bowl, combine Greek yogurt, chopped chives, dill, minced garlic, and lemon juice. Stir until well mixed. Season with salt and pepper. Pour into a second small bowl.
  5. Assemble the Board: Place the two bowls of dip on opposite sides of a large board or platter. Arrange the pretzel ‘fingers’ around the bowls, fanning them out.
  6. Add the Veggies and Garnish: Scatter cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, and black olives in the empty spaces. Tuck fresh rosemary sprigs here and there. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a smooth cheese sauce, use freshly shredded cheese and keep heat low when adding cheese. Dips can be made a day ahead; reheat cheese sauce gently. For extra creepiness, dip the knuckle end of pretzels in red food coloring mixed with water. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free pretzel rods. For a dairy-free version, use plant-based cheddar and unsweetened almond milk.
