Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Peel and core the apples. Cut each apple into 8 wedges. Set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg. Set aside.
  3. Open the can of crescent rolls and separate them along the perforated lines to get 8 triangles. Gently stretch each triangle slightly. Place 2 apple wedges at the wide end of each triangle, then sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon of the cinnamon sugar mixture over the apples.
  4. Starting at the wide end, roll each triangle up around the apples, tucking in the sides as you go. Place each dumpling seam-side down in an ungreased 8×8-inch baking dish.
  5. Melt the 1/4 cup unsalted butter and brush it over the tops of the dumplings. Sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar mixture over the top.
  6. In a small saucepan, whisk together 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add 1 cup water and whisk until smooth. Place over medium heat and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened slightly (about 3-4 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons cubed butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  7. Pour the hot sauce evenly over the dumplings in the dish. Bake for 28-32 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the sauce is bubbly around the edges. The apples should be tender when pierced with a fork.
  8. Let the dumplings rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Don’t overfill the dough; two apple wedges per dumpling is perfect. Seal the seams well to prevent leaking. Use room temperature butter for brushing to avoid soggy dough. If dumplings brown too quickly, tent with foil for the last 10 minutes. For a thicker sauce, add an extra teaspoon of flour to the sugar mixture.
