This bright, zesty cranberry orange relish with a kick of fresh ginger is the perfect no-cook side dish for your holiday table. Ready in just 10 minutes, it’s a crowd-pleaser that pairs beautifully with turkey, ham, or even ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340g) fresh cranberries
  • 1 large navel orange, unpeeled, washed well, cut into 8 wedges
  • 2-inch piece (about 25g) fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar, or to taste
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon or a pinch of cloves

Instructions

  1. Wash and prep your orange. Scrub the orange well, then cut it into 8 wedges through the peel and pith. Pick out any obvious seeds.
  2. Peel and chop the ginger. Use the edge of a spoon to scrape off the skin, then roughly chop the ginger into a few pieces.
  3. Pulse the orange first. Drop the orange wedges into a food processor and pulse 4-5 times until broken down into small chunks. Scrape down the sides.
  4. Add the cranberries and ginger. Add the cranberries and chopped ginger to the food processor. Pulse 6-8 times (1-second pulses each) until the cranberries are chopped but still chunky (pea-sized pieces).
  5. Add the sugar and pulse to combine. Sprinkle the sugar over the mixture and pulse 2-3 more times to combine. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  6. Let it rest. Allow the relish to sit for at least 30 minutes before serving so the sugar draws out the juices and melds the flavors.
  7. Give it a final stir. Stir well before serving. Optionally, add a tiny pinch of salt to brighten the flavors.

Notes

Don’t over-process the relish; pulse for a chunky texture. Let the relish rest for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld. The relish can be made up to 2 weeks ahead and stored in the refrigerator. For a spiced version, add 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and a pinch of cloves. For a maple-ginger version, substitute 1/3 cup pure maple syrup for the sugar. For a low-sugar option, use 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup and add a finely chopped apple. For a spicy kick, add a seeded jalapeño with the ginger. For an herbed version, stir in 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary or thyme after pulsing.
