A lighter, refined-sugar-free twist on classic caramel apple cider sangria, made with date caramel, fresh apple cider, and crisp white wine. Perfect for fall gatherings, this easy recipe delivers cozy, spiced flavor without the sugar crash.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (500 ml) apple cider
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry white wine (Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 3 tablespoons date caramel
  • 34 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 medium Honeycrisp apples
  • 1 medium orange
  • 1 cup (240 ml) sparkling water or club soda
  • 23 tablespoons brandy or bourbon (optional)
  • Ice cubes (preferably apple cider ice cubes)

Instructions

  1. Wash the apples and orange thoroughly. Core the apples and slice into thin rounds or half-moons (about 1/4 inch thick). Slice the orange into thin rounds, leaving the peel on. Remove seeds from orange slices if desired.
  2. In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of date caramel with 2 tablespoons of warm water. Stir until smooth and pourable. If too thick, microwave for 10 seconds.
  3. Place the apple slices, orange rounds, and cinnamon sticks in the bottom of a large pitcher. Pour the diluted date caramel over the fruit. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  4. Pour in the apple cider and the entire bottle of white wine. Stir gently with a wooden spoon. If using brandy or bourbon, add it now.
  5. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (2-3 hours is better) to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Just before serving, stir in the sparkling water or club soda.
  7. Fill glasses with ice cubes. Pour the sangria over the ice, including some fruit in each glass. Garnish with extra cinnamon sticks or star anise if desired.

Notes

For best flavor, let the sangria chill for 2-3 hours. If making ahead, prepare the base (cider, wine, date caramel, cinnamon) up to 3 days in advance; add fruit and sparkling water just before serving. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine with 2 more cups of apple cider and a splash of apple cider vinegar, then add ginger beer or sparkling water for fizz.
