A bright, zesty, and slightly spicy cranberry sauce that comes together in under 20 minutes. Fresh ginger and orange zest elevate this simple sauce, making it a perfect addition to any holiday table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340 g) fresh cranberries
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) fresh orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Zest the orange to get 2 tablespoons of zest, then juice it to get 1/2 cup. Peel and grate the ginger to get 1 tablespoon. Rinse the cranberries and pick out any soft or shriveled ones.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, water, and fresh orange juice. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the fresh cranberries to the simmering liquid and stir. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries start to pop.
  4. Add the grated ginger and orange zest. Stir thoroughly and cook for another 3-5 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove from heat. The sauce will thicken more as it cools. Let it cool in the pot for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a serving bowl or jar.
  6. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold. For a smoother sauce, blend with an immersion blender after cooling.

Notes

Don’t overcook the cranberries; cook for a total of 8-10 minutes for the best texture. Use a heavy-bottomed pot to prevent burning. Grate ginger finely to avoid chunks. Zest the orange before juicing. Let the sauce cool completely before storing to prevent condensation. Make ahead of time for best flavor.
