A quick and easy green bean casserole with a creamy cheese sauce and crispy fried onion topping, ready in under 30 minutes. Perfect for busy weeknights or holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz frozen green beans
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 ½ cups crispy fried onions
  • ½ cup extra shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. Microwave frozen green beans on high for 4-5 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain excess water and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden and nutty.
  4. Slowly pour in milk, whisking constantly, and cook until thickened (3-4 minutes).
  5. Reduce heat to low. Add 2 cups cheddar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth.
  6. Add cooked green beans to the sauce and stir gently to coat.
  7. Pour mixture into prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  8. Sprinkle with ½ cup extra cheddar, then top with crispy fried onions.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes until bubbly and onions are golden. Tent with foil if browning too fast.
  10. Let rest 2-3 minutes before serving.

Notes

For gluten-free, use gluten-free all-purpose flour and certified gluten-free fried onions. For dairy-free, use plant-based butter, unsweetened oat milk, and dairy-free cheddar. Add cooked bacon or ham for a heartier meal. Leftovers keep in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat in microwave or oven.
