These fudgy chocolate crinkle cookies feature a dramatic spiderweb pattern that appears magically in the oven. Made with simple ingredients and no chilling required, they’re the perfect quick and easy Halloween treat that kids and adults love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups (180g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (50g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon white gel food coloring
  • ½ cup (60g) powdered sugar, for rolling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
  4. Add white gel food coloring and mix until just combined, leaving streaks of white in the dough.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Dough will be thick and slightly sticky.
  7. If desired, chill dough for 15 minutes for easier handling.
  8. Place powdered sugar in a small bowl. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough (about 1.5 inches) and roll into balls. Roll each ball generously in powdered sugar until fully coated.
  9. Place coated balls on prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Cookies will look puffy and crackly; edges should be set but centers still soft.
  11. Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best results, use white gel food coloring (not liquid) to create the spiderweb effect. Underbake slightly for fudgy texture. Roll generously in powdered sugar for dramatic crackle. Let baking sheets cool between batches. Cookies taste even better the next day.
